Synopsis:

It had been a long time coming, but FINALLY I watched ONG-BAK (The Thai Warrior). This movie has been in my mental movie queue for at least five years. It has waxed and waned in legend in my awareness. Mostly I remember whispers about it, and thankfully my memory never completely lost thought of it because tonight I was treated to a movie of pure action by a real master of Muay Thai (a kind of martial art), Tony Jaa.

I was on board from the opening scene, a frantic climb up a huge tree by a group of physically competing men. Why were they doing this? Was there anything at the top of the tree? Damn, are they hitting the ground hard when they fall! I did not know while viewing ONG-BAK, but the action was all “real,” in that no stunt doubles were used, no CGI, and no wires. Sure the fight scenes were choreographed, but those thumps from that tree hurt me just watching it, and knowing that Tony really did all those things, nothing but respect. A true movie bad-ass.

One scene just sticks in my mind. All Tony did was one move, but that was enough. It was perfectly in character too.

ONG-BAK is a Thai made film, and it was nice to get to visit Thailand again through the movie (I have visited Thailand twice, spending a month total in country). I was reminded though about how unpleasant Bangkok can be (traveler’s rule is get out of the city as soon as you can!).

The movie’s story is really simple. Local village treasure is stolen, taken to the big city, local hero is sent to retrieve it, let ass kicking commence. I don’t think Tony said more than three lines of dialogue all movie, and I loved that. Just a man of action. Again, respect.

Muay Thai is really visceral to see on screen. So many elbows to the top of the head! Looks epic on in action sequences.

A few supporting characters add just enough story and emotional connect to the plot, so that the ending does make you feel a bit concerned and worried over the fate of the three main protagonists (Tony’s character, then another villager who left for Bangkok years before, and his clever girlfriend).

There is already a sequel, and it is already in my Netflix queue.

Synopsis:

Lars (Ryan Gosling) and Gus (Paul Schneider) are the grown children of a father who died recently and a mother who died giving birth to Lars. But as brothers, they couldn't be more different. While Gus lives in the family home and has a loving wife (Emily Mortimer) and a child on the way, Lars leads a more reclusive existence in the family's garage, hiding in plain sight of his small, wintry hometown. Painfully shy and eccentric, Lars fails to recognize that his co-worker Margo (Kelli Garner) has a major crush on him, and he picks up on a casual reference made by his cubicle mate, who mentions a website where you can order life-sized, anatomically correct sex dolls. But instead of seeing a sex object, Lars sees in this doll a potential life partner and the only kind of social "peer" he can relate to. So Lars orders a doll, whom he names Bianca, and begins treating her with utmost gentlemanly respect -- and as though she's his real-life, flesh-and-blood girlfriend. As he begins bringing Bianca with him everywhere he goes, the townspeople have to find just the right balance between supporting Lars' unusual romance and trying to introduce him to a more conventional partner. Lars and the Real Girl was written by Six Feet Under scribe Nancy Oliver and directed by Mr. Woodcock's Craig Gillespie.
